About
How The Program Was Developed
The SDBBP was originally conceived by Michael Massie, a multiple Black Belt holder and martial artist of over 25 years. A long-time instructor and proponent of simple and practical self-defense methods, Mike wanted an adult program that his students would enjoy, that provided easy and simple to learn movements, yet that also offered enough depth and material to keep adult students interested and challenged for as long as they wanted to continue their training.
After three years of research and development, the Level I SDBBP course was born. Soon after, Mike showed the SDBBP to SFC Jim Mahan (US Army), an Iraq combat veteran with well over 30 years in the combative arts. SFC Mahan was impressed with the simplicity and logic of the curriculum, and immediately joined Mike as the SDBBP Combatives Advisor and Director of Curriculum Development in order to refine and expand on the original material.

Held in Austin, Texas and taught to a select group of black belts and martial art school owners from all over the United States, the course graduated an initial cadre of eight representatives who will launch SDBBP programs in their own facilities beginning in August 2009.
These representatives are authorized to represent the Self Defense Black Belt Programâ„¢ and will return to complete their Level I SDBBP Certification later this year.
Additional Course Material And Certification Programs
Licensed Instructors who attend the requisite training and pass their qualifications exams will offer their students instruction in advanced self defense training, including grappling for personal protection, unarmed defensive tactics against weapons, stick and knife defensive techniques and tactics for civilians, and hand gunning for civilian self-defense and home protection.
Our next Level I Instructor Training and Certification Seminar will be held in Spring, Texas in early October of 2009 (exact date TBA). Attendance at each event is limited. Contact us to request more information or to register.
